Better informed. Before the border.
A practical starting point for Canadian vehicle imports and trade with Europe. These eight notes separate vehicle eligibility, customs treatment and the commercial roles in a transaction.
Make, market and admissibility are different questions.
A brand badge, a country of purchase or a transport route cannot establish whether a particular vehicle may be imported. Original certification, the month and year of manufacture, vehicle documents and the destination's requirements form the starting point.
Understand the trade before committing.
Do you trade as a dealer or purchase in the buyer’s name?
For our principal trading transactions, we purchase vehicles in our own name, take ownership and resell them to eligible trade buyers. We do not purchase in the buyer’s name in these transactions. Consignment is a separate service with specifically agreed terms. The relevant seller and contracting entity are identified in each agreement.
Can a vehicle from Germany or Europe be imported into Canada?
It depends on the specific vehicle. Vehicles built for the European market that are under 15 years old generally cannot be imported permanently simply by modifying them to Canadian standards. Limited exceptions require their own assessment. Make, place of purchase and shipping route do not establish admissibility. We assess the sourcing opportunity against the vehicle’s age, original certification and current Canadian requirements before proceeding.
Official source: Transport Canada ↗What does Canada’s 15-year rule actually mean?
For most vehicle classes other than buses, the federal age exemption applies once a vehicle is at least 15 years old, measured from its month and year of manufacture. Model year and first registration date are not the test. Customs entry requirements still apply. Federal import eligibility does not guarantee provincial registration, roadworthiness or insurability.
Official source: Transport Canada ↗Is every vehicle bought in the United States admissible in Canada?
No. Original certification, import history, vehicle type, admissibility and applicable Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) requirements must be reviewed. Buying a European-specification vehicle in the United States, or routing it through the United States, does not by itself establish Canadian eligibility. Recall status, documents and any required modifications also need vehicle-specific review.
Official source: CBSA · D19-12-1 ↗Does CETA make vehicles traded between Canada and Europe duty-free?
CETA can provide preferential customs treatment for qualifying originating goods in either direction. The applicable origin rules and proof-of-origin requirements must be met. A European badge or a Canadian purchase invoice is not enough. Registration or resale in Canada does not, by itself, give a vehicle Canadian originating status under CETA. We coordinate the assessment with the customs broker. CETA does not replace vehicle admissibility requirements or remove all taxes, charges or additional trade measures.

Yes. We coordinate vehicle transport, shipping documents and customs clearance through appropriately licensed customs brokers. The responsible importer, contracting parties, delivery terms and scope of services are identified in the transaction documents. We provide coordination; customs declarations are carried out by the appointed licensed broker.
Official source: CBSA · Customs brokers ↗What do you need for an initial vehicle assessment?
Start with make, model, variant, manufacture date, VIN if known, location, certification information and destination market. For a specific vehicle, title or registration documents, condition and history records, origin evidence where relevant, and the intended importer’s details are reviewed before an offer or shipment is finalised. A model suggestion in our finder is not an offer of stock.
Can I buy a vehicle as a private individual in Canada or the USA?
No. USCT AutoXchange serves eligible automotive businesses through the permitted scope of the responsible trading entity. We do not sell to private retail customers in Canada or the United States. Business identity and the applicable dealer or trading status are assessed before any transaction.
Check the vehicle. Check the current rules.
General information, not an individual admissibility, tax or legal assessment. Rules, tariffs and additional measures can change. Check current official requirements before entering into a purchase. Federal import eligibility does not by itself establish provincial registration, roadworthiness or insurability.
